Description
Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas
The majestic Santa Elena Canyon is the most impressive in Big Bend National Park - it is visible for over 10 miles away, as the Rio Grande changes direction abruptly after following beneath the straight Sierra Ponce cliffs for several miles and heads due west, cutting through the mountains via a deep, narrow gorge. The cliff on the right side is in America and the cliff on the left is in Mexico.
Big Bend National Park in the U.S. state of Texas has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. The river serves as part of the natural border between Texas and Mexico.
