Description
Castolon in Big Bend National Park, Texas
Visiting the Castolon area was a surprising treat for me. It was very interesting to read about the history of this former farming town. Most of the residents were from Mexico. Once immigration began in 1927, many families voluntarily returned to Mexico rather than be deported. After Big Bend National Park was established - the population declined from 25 to only 3 and the post office closed in 1954. Today the only residents of Castolon are National Park employees. The Castolon store remains open as one of the most visited stops in the park.
In this view you see one of the remaining farming buildings and Castolon Peak in the distance.
